Alternative Livelihood

Why ALPC

To set up trustworthy, efficient, and effective means of supporting marginalized members of pastoral communities through alternative means of making a living especially those living with disabilities, elderly and signal headed families.

Mission Statements

To provide an alternative livelihood to drought-affected pastoral communities in the Kenya counties of Wajir, Marsabit, and Mandera, as well as other neighboring districts in Ethiopia, through individual or communal ventures in alternative livelihood practices.

Our Vision

To set up trustworthy, efficient, and effective means of supporting marginalized members of pastoral communities through alternative means of making a living especially those living with disabilities, elderly and signal headed families.

Objectives

  • To provide new business skills and startup capital to the most vulnerable pastoral households on an annual basis, with special consideration given to vulnerable woman-headed households.
  • Annually sponsor vulnerable pastoral households for national medical care (NHIF).
  • To support medical camps in the area of operation
  • Paying school fees for learners from vulnerable pastoral households at the secondary and tertiary
    levels.

Goal

Our goal is to support pastoral communities to transition from a dependence on pastoral activities and toward more sustainable means of supporting themselves and their families, through equipping them with new business skills, provision of business startup capital, improved access to healthcare, clean water, and sanitation and provision of Education grants to leaners
at secondary and tertiary level from the most vulnerable households.

Our Core Values

ALPC will uphold the core humanitarian principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence in supporting pastoral committees in the Kenyan counties of Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, and neighboring districts of
Ethiopia.

Background

According to the 2019 national census, the counties of Wajir, Marsabit, and Mandera in Kenya have a population of 2.5 million people with approximately 26% of the country’s land mass. The people who live in these counties represent a wide range of racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Most of the locals live in pastoral communities that rely heavily on agriculture and livestock. Extreme weather patterns over the past 30 years due to the global climate change, have disrupted people’s ability to earn a living, making these communities more vulnerable to malnutrition and communicable diseases that could have been avoided with better diets.

This strained the already limited means of obtaining necessities like food, water, and medical attention. In addition, thisrecurring caused inter and intra county/District movement , creating IDPs who exacerbated the predicament and made it necessary to take novel steps toward altering their standard of living. Alternative livelihood for pastoral communities (ALPC) is a Community Based Organization, Non-Profit and Non-Governmental, formed by a group of professionals in an effort to help locals transition away from a dependence on pastoral activities and toward more sustainable means of supporting themselves and their families. This includes equipping them with new business skills, provision of business startup capital, and providing them with improved access to healthcare, clean water, and sanitation in an effort to lower the rate of preventable illness and death. In addition to supporting learners at the secondary and tertiary level from the most financially challenged households with Education grants. While there is some governmental support, there is still a large gap in the delivery of basic services like healthcare, education, clean water, and sanitation;ALPC is working to close this gap and bring these services closer to the people.
